Interconnectors
Interconnectors
We understand the important role of interconnectors and the need for technically suitable and highly reliable cable solutions to enable a sustainable exchange and integration of energy into the electricity supplies of the respective countries and in the wider development of regional energy transmission infrastructures.
We deliver comprehensive and fully managed EPCI projects providing the interconnector cable system solutions, utilising our extensive engineering, manufacturing, and turnkey installation capabilities, with a complete project management approach, to provide the necessary cost effective high power cable connections
Prysmian sits at the forefront of the interconnectors sector, advancing technological milestones to provide performance optimised and economically efficient HVDC cable systems to our Clients engaged in the development, extension and upgrading of their power grids
We offer an extensive and industry leading HVDC portfolio to address these needs, with the widest product range available. We offer the paper insulated solutions of MI and MI-PPL, and extruded cables with both P-Laser and XLPE insulation systems.
Our innovation is a never ending process, which is illustrated with our present activities focused on extending the voltage levels. We are currently developing an 800 kV P-Laser capability to add to our current 600 kV solutions.
In other fields, we’re hard at work further considering systems and methodologies to enable cable connections to be made in increased water depths, with water as deep as 3,000 metres.
The Prysmian Advantage
One of our greatest assets is our capability to provide a comprehensive package for our customers.
With our end-to-end service, utilising our range of extensive manufacturing resources, installation and engineering assets, including our fleet of world class cable laying vessels, we are a single source provider offering full EPCI turnkey cable system solutions to meet our customer requirements
Our full value chain sets us apart, giving our customers a hassle-free single point of contact for all their project needs.
Why Interconnectors?
Interconnectors provide economic benefits which are achieved through the delivery of lower cost energy sourced in one country and transmitted into another, as well as an increased efficiency in the use of generated power through the balance of supply and demand across greater geographical areas. These interconnectors increase the security of supply of electrical energy to specific countries, and can help promote the integration and development of renewable energy, such as in the case of regional development of offshore wind farms which can be quite remote from the centres of demand.
Prysmian in action
We’re world-leaders in the application of interconnectors, and we’ve played a pivotal role in the majority of projects in this area globally.
Submarine
- Western Link. From design and manufacture, to installation, testing and commissioning, Prysmian is delivering a full turnkey service for the HDVC link between Scotland and England. Offshore installation has been achieved through our own cable laying ship, the Giulio Verne.
- North Sea Link (NSL). Connecting Norway and the UK, and with a total route length of 740 km, the NSL represents the longest HDVC subsea cable interconnection ever to be created. Prysmian is both supplying and installing a total of around 950 km of submarine and land cables for this eminent project.
Land
- INELFE: France-Spain electrical interconnection. Classified as a ‘Priority Project’ by the EU, this marks a series of significant milestones, being the highest power rated (2 GW) and highest voltage (± 320 kV) land HVDC system employing an extruded cable connection ready for commercial operation. Our turnkey cable system saw the delivery of very long cable lengths (approximately twice the industry average) and, consequently, a substantial reduction of the overall project execution time and risks.
- Italy-France interconnection. Scheduled to commence in 2019, Prysmian will be responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the system.
